Plan on attending Midwood Maynia this year from Friday, April 30th to May 1st, 2010 at Midwood Park in Charlotte, NC. In addition to a wonderful time, it also features the Home & Garden Tour highlighting some great homes in Plaza-Midwood. As one of the favorite Charlotte spring festivals, it welcomes the season and celebrates the warm weather and new blossoms. It also is a fantastic party one can connect with old friends, neighbors and family.

The Plaza Midwood Neighborhood Association produces Midwood Maynia and also sponsors it in part. Furthermore, the Association currently is seeking Plaza-Midwood homes to be included in the home tour plus vendors, as well as offering valuable sponsorships. One of Charlotte, North Carolina’s most diverse neighborhoods, Plaza-Midwood, is located just northeast of uptown. With a distinctive architectural legacy, homes in Plaza Midwood have formed a picturesque neighborhood with a diverse community and flourishing business sector. Having experienced an migration from downtown Charlotte, NC real estate with the urban flight of the 1950s and 1960s, the Plaza Midwood Neighborhood Association (PMNA) eventually was organized. By the mid-1970s, after some deterioration in parts of the neighborhood, a group of residents of Plaza-Midwood banded together with a goal to preserve their neighborhood.

The Plaza-Midwood Local Historic District was formed in August 1975 as a result of these efforts. Today, it is the model for the designation process. Plaza Midwood homes have been restored to their turn-of-the-century charm and beauty, consisting primarily of bungalow-style homes in this predominant residential neighborhood. Shaded by ancient pin oaks with front-yard gardens lining the sidewalks of these pedestrian-friendly streets, the neighborhood celebrates Midwood Maynia festival held in Midwood Park. This past Saturday, Feb. 13, the Winter Fling was fun-filled event held at the opulent setting of the beautiful VanLandingham Estate.

Plaza-Midwood was established in the early 1900’s and the neighborhood was supposed to be Charlotte’s next Myers Park. Developed during 1910’s and 20’s and designed around a trolley line running from the downtown area, Plaza-Midwood is a mix of home styles because various interested groups created several disparate developments based upon the economy at the time. These small neighborhoods eventually expanded to compose all the homes in the Plaza-Midwood neighborhood today in the Charlotte, NC real estate market.

Those early fluctuating economic conditions and conflicting developer visions created the most eclectic of Charlotte’s local historic districts. Designated a historic district in 1992, Midwood blends traditional and modern with new home construction replicating the past. Large craftsman bungalows lining The Plaza, a tree-lined boulevard that divides this neighborhood north to south from Central Avenue to its intersection with Parkwood Avenue, were built before quaint cottages were developed after the war.
