Homes in Dilworth Reflect Two Different Architectural Sections in Charlotte, NC Real Estate

The mission of the Dilworth Community Development Association (DCDA), comprised of a Board and non-Board member volunteers from Dilworth residents and business owners, is to improve the quality of life within the community. By promoting and preserving the community’s architectural heritage, as well as future planning and developmental, the DCDA plays a large part in making the Dilworth community a great place to live in the Charlotte NC real estate market.

Homes in Dilworth reflect the two different architectural sections. Frame Bungalows from the 1910s and later brick Bungalows, Colonial Revivals and Tudor Revival cottages from the 1920s are found in the southern portion. Developed later, the northern portion has some large upper-class residences along Dilworth Road and has primarily 1920s homes with several more recent ranch houses. Designated as an Historic District, qualifying homes in the Dilworth district of Charlotte are eligible to receive state tax credits for historic preservation renovations.

Dilworth Remains an Active and Accessible Neighborhood in Charlotte, NC

The Dilworth neighborhood is as vibrant today as the original vision of the founder. Edward Dilworth Latta had contracted with the Olmstead Brothers, the nation’s pre-eminent landscape designers from the northeast, to expand the Dilworth neighborhood with curved roads and dramatic landscaping. These plans would drive much of Charlotte’s future character and in 1987; Dilworth was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Within two decades of Latta’s original concept and suburban development, the community added churches, businesses and schools to accommodate the growing population as historic Dilworthhad become a neighborhood of distinguished character with a mix of mansions, mill houses and middle-class homes.

The current neighborhood is filled with quaint little shops, great restaurants and beautiful tree-lined streets with rich architecture in the homes of Dilworth. East Boulevard is the main thoroughfare of Dilworth, which boasts over 20 restaurants in the neighborhood. The Carolinas Medical Center and Greek Orthodox Church are key landmarks in Dilworth , which also has convenient access to the Light Rail, airport, Uptown, SouthPark and Freedom Park. Homes for sale in Dilworth are attractive to parents of school-age children with the St. Patrick Elementary School and the performing arts magnet program, as well as neighborhood assignments schools including Alexander Graham Middle School and Myers Park High School.

Architecturally-Rich Dilworth Neighborhood Remains Historic Gem of Charlotte, NC

Today Dilworth is a vibrant neighborhood, as well as one of Charlotte’s most historic, having been named after entrepreneur and streetcar owner, Edward Dilworth Latta. As the first suburb established in 1891 and located southwest of the original city limit, the Dilworth suburb – east of South Boulevard – expanded to the south and east. Victorian architecture was at its peak at the turn of the century, making Dilworth one of the city’s premier neighborhoods. The area developed along the streetcar lines extending out from the city. The idea of being out in the country was important to people and precipitated the residential push outward to the edge of town that continues to be the case in modern day living. With the streetcar, middle-class people as well as the wealthy could own a home in the countryside and still commute into work.

The original section of Dilworth includes the last well-preserved pre-1910 upper-class residential area remaining in the city. The first grand homes were located on South Boulevard and East Boulevard. This historic district has some of Charlotte’s early efforts with the now-popular Colonial Revival architecture style as seen in the Walter Brem residence at 211 East Boulevard. Latta Park was at the southern end of the street car line and included a colorful park, beautiful boulevards, inviting bungalows and expansive mansions. Freedom Park is located at the other end of East boulevard. The Mallonee-Jones House at 400 East Kingston, constructed in 1895 with the distinctive “sunburst” gables of Queen Anne Victorian style, is one of the significant remaining residences.
