With a distinctive architectural legacy, homes in Plaza Midwood have formed a picturesque neighborhood with a diverse community and flourishing business sector. Having experienced an migration from downtown Charlotte, NC real estate with the urban flight of the 1950s and 1960s, the Plaza Midwood Neighborhood Association (PMNA) eventually was organized. By the mid-1970s, after some deterioration in parts of the neighborhood, a group of residents of Plaza-Midwood banded together with a goal to preserve their neighborhood.

The Plaza-Midwood Local Historic District was formed in August 1975 as a result of these efforts. Today, it is the model for the designation process. Plaza Midwood homes have been restored to their turn-of-the-century charm and beauty, consisting primarily of bungalow-style homes in this predominant residential neighborhood. Shaded by ancient pin oaks with front-yard gardens lining the sidewalks of these pedestrian-friendly streets, the neighborhood celebrates Midwood Maynia festival held in Midwood Park. This past Saturday, Feb. 13, the Winter Fling was fun-filled event held at the opulent setting of the beautiful VanLandingham Estate.
